The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre was activated at 6:00am this morning, for Tropical Depression 09F, forecast to bring damaging gales to Tongatapu and 'Eua late this afternoon and overnight. Schools are closed today in Southern Tonga and gale warnings are in force for all Tonga land areas and coastal waters.

A gale wind warning is now in force for all of Tonga land areas and coastal waters as Tropical Depression 11F was located 55km west southwest of Niuafo’ou or 245km west of Niuatoputapu or 385km northwest of Vava'u at 7:00pm this evening. There is a high chance for the system to develop into a tropical cyclone tonight, according to Tonga Meteorological Services.

A fishing boat was washed on a reef to the east of the Masefield Naval Base, in Nuku'alofa late this afternoon, the victim of a tropical depression that has lashed Tongatapu with strong winds and heavy rain during the past 48 hours.
