The Pacific Games Council is eager to see a Master Plan for the 2019 Pacific Games in Tonga turn into reality, and to make this happen the Tongan Government should swiftly secure contracts for the design and the construction of sporting facilities and venues required, the President of the Pacific Games Council, Vidhya Lakhan said at a Press Conference in Nuku'alofa on Friday, 22 April.

A visiting Tongan couple from New Zealand who wanted to adopt a young girl had their application rejected by the Supreme Court on Friday, April 22. The couple intended to take the 5 year-old to be raised in their home in Christchurch. However, the court concluded that the child was better off living in Tonga.

Tonga's King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service today, April 25, at the seafront cenotaph in Nuku'alofa. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the service of Australian and New Zealand forces in the First World War, on the Western Front (France and Belgium) in the Battle of the Somme, with the support of Pacific Island nations, including Tonga.

One of Tonga’s greatest musicians, Bill Sevesi (born Wilfred Jeffs), passed away yesterday April 23. He was aged 92. Bill Sevesi was an early pioneer of modern Pacific Island Music and is credited with popularising and introducing the Hawaiian guitar key to Tonga and other Pacific Islands. Bill also introduced Tongan music to the airwaves for the first time. He was inducted in the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

Tropical Cyclone Amos is still intensifying and on its current track is expected to reach Category 3 strength by 1:00pm Saturday April 23 and lie about 300km north of Niuafo’ou or about 385km North Northwest of Niuatoputapu. Strong winds may affect Niuafo’ou land area from early Saturday morning and Niuatoputapu land area from late Saturday to Sunday. Gale force winds are expected over open waters to the north of the two Niuas from tomorrow morning and Sunday, advises Tonga Met.

Strong wind warnings are currently in place for all land and sea areas of Vava’u and the Niuas as Tropical Cyclone Amos slowly intensifies and tracks towards the Niuas and Samoa today, warns the Tonga Meteorology Department. The cyclone Category 2 is moving southeast and has the potential to develop into a Category 3 storm over the next few days.

Former Mate Ma’a Tonga winger Mateaki Mafi (43) was a prize winner at the 2016 Crufts dog show in Birmingham, England, according to local news media. One of his dogs a Neapolitan Mastiff won the best of breed award in the “working dogs” category. His dog is named “Freddo Dei Mastini Della Rupe”.

A major $66 million upgrade of the domestic wharf in Nuku'alofa to be completed by 2018, was launched today with a groundbreaking by HM King Tupou VI, who was accompanied by Queen Nanasipau'u. The project funded as a part of Japan's grant aid will include the extension of the domestic wharf and the building of a terminal for passengers and cargo.
