Brutal criminal thugs destroying Tonga's reputation as the Friendly Isles
Saturday, November 19, 2016 - 20:01
Tonga's reputation as the Friendly Islands is being threatened by criminal thugs –thought to be from the same group, who are attacking Tonga's Chinese shopkeepers with a brutality that is breathtaking. Shop surveillance videos released to Matangi Tonga this week show extremely violent crimes. The videos record attacks – in one a gun is fired to the side of a woman shopkeeper – and another where a Pahu shopkeeper, hit by a suckerpunch to the face, falls backward suffering severe head injuries. He remains paralysed and fed on a tube.

Very disturbing
Uai N Oliveti Kolotau: This is not only embarrassing for the Tongan community but also very disturbing. These thugs have no idea what they are doing to these families when they just want to have a normal life in Tonga also there is no need for these kind of violent act as the Chinese are the ones that provide the cheapest products in tonga with their stores which is enough for the community to afford. Koeha kuo nau si'i ta pehe ai kau siana hili ange they are more useful to tonga in every aspect more than one. Hopefully these families will recover from these heinous acts sooner than later.
Judith Moa: This needs to be dealt with quickly, there has been so much of this going on in the past few years, youth and young people have nothing to do workwise, finish school and then nothing. There could be a lot more done, there used to be thriving work opportunities for exporting fruits, veg , pumpkins etc , there would be a great tourism industry which should have started again from Rio Olympics, unfortunately money sending to families in Tonga , they have become too dependent on. Get back to the roots of living in a beautiful environment and work towards fixing this.
Karen Taylor: Totally agree, seems like the situation has got out of hand in a country that has a lot to offer especially in tourism. A hard line needs to be taken with these thugs.
Ana Tupou Salt: Agree.
Nicole Griffin: Aww that is disgusting sentences need to be tough on these thugs.
Edmonds Ananda Hone: The churches and fanau need to all come together to identify problems and help these young men on the verge of committing such heinous acts.
Richard Tau'atevalu: Jail him or hang his B....haha !
Mary Jane McCormick: terrible
Alfonso Kolonga Mc Intosh: I think some of these guys doing this are deported Tongans from overseas.
Kirsty Bowe: Disgusting....
Jo Taylor-Kupu: No excuses !

Lino Hola: Hang
Matoto Man: And I wonder how those illegal weapons slip in to our innocent island. Yes, it's so shameful.
Sam Fakalata [Friendly Isles] Lol never heard of that as a reputation.
Saw some figures regarding
Saw some figures regarding the prison population in Australia and was shocked to see that Samoa was number one and Tonga number two relative to population percentage. Seems that bad habits learnt elsewhere may be returning to Tonga through deportation. One thing that could be improved is the light sentences that seem to be handed out for very serious crimes. Nothing will turn visitors off more than violence. So sad that "The Friendly Islands" may be lost.
