Eleven people, including five children, were happy to reach Tongatapu safely yesterday evening after their small boat had failed to reach its destination Fonoifua Island in the Ha'apai Group on Monday, triggering a search and rescue operation. “When it got dark we had not spotted any island, it started raining and our navigation was off route so we decided to anchor the boat, and slept overnight intending to continue our journey the next day,” said the Captain Tevita Mateaki Fonua, but the boat went adrift. The final program for the 2016 Heilala Festival has been released by the Heilala Festival Events Committee. This includes the Miss Heilala Pageant under the theme, "Beautiful Tonga". Tonight a cultural event at the Queen Sālote Memorial Hall will feature the Miss Junior/Pre-teen Tau'olunga dancing competitions.

A missing boat with 11 people on board has returned to Nuku'alofa this evening after calling for assistance off 'Eueiki Island near Tongatapu. Some of the passengers were taken to Vaiola Hospital for observation and released, search and rescuers reported tonight.

Search and rescue operations today found no sightings of a small boat carrying 11 people including five children, that failed to arrive at Fonoifua Island in Ha'apai, after leaving Nuku'alofa on Monday afternoon. The first report from a New Zealand surveillance aircraft that searched the area this afternoon had no sightings but the aerial and sea search is continuing.

In its latest state of the economy report, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on Tonga to improve its debt management, make broader reforms to increase revenue, and to effectively manage public spending. In the IMF's 2016 Article IV report released this week, Tonga was also encouraged to continue to seek concessional and grant financing for the South Pacific Games, while the report welcomed Tonga's efforts in curbing the wage bill and avoiding cost overruns. It urged Tonga to provide more opportunities for private sector development.
