A black-out at the Fua’amotu International Airport runway at 6.33pm yesterday evening disrupted international air services between Tonga, New Zealand and Australia. Two commercial scheduled flights were unable to land, and another private medical evacuation flight was delayed until this morning.

A group of seven Georgians have been shifted by Tonga Police from accomodation in Tofoa to an undisclosed place over the weekend. Tonga Police said they had reasons to move the group which they could not yet disclose.

Superintendent Tevita Vailea (44) was awarded the 2016 Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Chair’s Award for outstanding servicing to policing in the region. This is the first time Tonga had submitted nominations for the award, since it started in 2005. Tongan officers were in the top two nominations for the award.

No information yet has been released by Tonga Police on how American Dean Jay Fletcher (54) who is charged with his wife's murder escaped a police station in Neiafu, Vava’u last month. A team of Senior Police Officers led by Chief Inspector Meleane Taueli is currently investigating the escape.

Tonga's Attorney General’s Office is asking the United States for a provisional arrest warrant of Dean Jay Fletcher, who is accused of murdering his wife in Neiafu, Vava'u. Fletcher fled police custody on September 29 and sailed to American Samoa in his yacht Sea Oak. Tonga is seeking an extradition - a complex process which is expected to take "some time".
