Tonga's King Tupou VI has dissolved the Tonga Legislative Assembly today with an instrument of dissolution Gazetted late this afternoon and posted on the Crown Law website. The king is commanding that a new election be held no later than 16 November 2017.

Violence, intimidation, control and isolation are being used against women in Tonga by some husbands who are seeking to gain "coercive control". Examples of some of the coercive control situations and real cases in Tonga included a man beating up his wife causing injuries to prevent her from going to an event, locking her up in a room when he leaves the house, calling her "ugly and stupid" or threatening her via text messaging.

A statistical report released by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E) has revealed that 22 Tongan immigrants/visitors were deported from the United States in 2016. The number is a significant increase from 2015 when ICE recorded 16 deportations to Tonga.

Three men and one woman were arrested last week, after Tonga Police discovered alleged drugs and cannabis on a property in ‘Umusi, Nuku’alofa. The four suspects were a 48-year-old man from ‘Umusi, a 49-year-old man from Houmakelikao, and a 31-year-old woman from Pahu. Another male from Houmakelikao was also arrested but his age was not released.

A Tongan-born and influential Australian Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Pastor, Athal Tolhurst (82), was laid to rest yesterday in Cooranbong, Australia. Tolhurst passed away on August 7 after being airlifted from Tonga where he had suffered a stroke.

Twenty-one Tongans received admission letters from the Chinese Government confirming their scholarships to study at Chinese universities, at the award ceremony on 15 August at Kahana Resort. They are expected to arrive in China prior to 8 September to begin learning the Chinese language before commencing their studies.
