The Aviation Alert level for Tonga's Home Reef volcanic activity was raised from Yellow to Orange this morning as the ongoing eruption has elevated to ash composition, but Tonga Geological Services (TGS) said there is low risk to the Vava'u and Ha'apai Communities.

We are worried about the people of Tonga. We former JICA volunteers created a song to cheer up the Tongan people affected by the January 15 events, and posted it on You Tube. Similarly in Japan 11 years ago. It is said that many years are still needed to care for the victims’ minds and regain the lost daily life. Tonga's domestic fibre optic telecommunications cable was torn apart by tremendous forces and deeply buried under volcanic debris on the ocean floor. It may take up to a year to fix. Tonga Cable Ltd. is looking worldwide for anyone with a 110km spare cable, but it may have to be specially manufactured and delivered from France. It was one of two cables broken during the Jan. 15 eruption.

A team of Tongan geologists who went out to observe the Jan. 14 eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai volcano witnessed spectacular explosions on the dangerous mission on Friday afternoon. The pulsating explosions throughout the day were also viewed from weather satellites in space.

An explosive volcanic eruption shooting ash and pyroclastic material up to 350 metres above sea level was captured on camera yesterday, 22 Dec., by Tonga Navy crew, sailing close to the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai active volcano. However, ash was not detected at the height of aviation, Taaniela Kula (TGS) said, “this is a point of discussion with the authorities.”

Sulphur dioxide emitted from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano continues to spread over the Ha'apai, Vava'u and Niuatoutapu groups drifting NNE at a high altitude of 8-14km. Tonga Geological Services said S02 measured highest near the ‘Otumu‘omu‘a Group. However, the steam cloud formation from the eruption has reduced significantly from yesterday.

Only a week after the massive eruption on Hunga Ha'apai on March 17-21, 2009, a group of four adventurers including a cameraman and an Italian golfer landed on the newly formed peninsula on the island and climbed up to the fragile rim of its volcanic crater, where there is a steaming sulphuric orange lake.
