An appeal by the Tonga National Rugby League (TNRL) against its expulsion from the International Rugby League (IRL) was dismissed by the international Court of Arbitration for Sport on 20 April. The judgement said that IRL officials had consistently reached out to TNRL, which continually refused to cooperate.

Flagbearer and shot-putter, ‘Atamaama Tu’utafaiva led Tonga’s athletes in a parade of nations, which opened proceedings at the 2019 Pacific Games opening ceremony held at Apia Park Stadium in Samoa, yesterday, 7 July. Around 4000 athletes are taking part in 27 sports. The Pacific Games will run until 20 July.

It’s something they’ve worked on - they have planned for and deliberately and methodically worked their way up to being our Olympic Gold medalists, so it’s not totally surprising to me,” said the Pacific Islands first Olympic medalist, Paea Wolfgramm today. "Fiji have done it the right way they’ve concentrated on building the sport up in their country," he told Matangi Tonga.
