An upgrade to Tonga’s Seismic Network will cover five strategically positioned stations at Nukuhetulu, Tongatapu; Mt. Talau Vava’u; Hihifo, Ha’apai; Niuafo’ou High School, Niuafo’ou; and Hihifo. Niuatoputapu, where upgrades to infrastructure will help to better monitor and detect earthquakes. The work is being funded by the World Bank through the Pacific Resilience Program (PREP).

An El Niño has been officially declared for Tonga today, by the Tonga Meteorology Department, meaning that the Central and Eastern Pacific Ocean is now warmer than usual, expecting warmer temperatures, less rainfall, and a more active cyclone season.

Tonga is experiencing unusual cold weather, with cool days and cooler nights, and local people are trying to keep warm. Sunday's 9.3°C at Lapaha was close to the national record low of 8.7°C experienced in 1994.

El Nina alert

An El Niño alert for Tonga was issued by the Meteorology Department, on 14 July, as forecasts show there is a 70% chance of El Niño forming this year. The likely impacts on Tonga will include cooler nights, less rainfall over the next 6-12 months, and more tropical cyclones in the next cyclone season from 1 November 2023 to 30 April 2024.

Three low pressure systems circling the South Pacific region today may potentially form cyclones by the weekend, says Tonga's Meteorology Department, who are monitoring Tropical Depression O7F near Vanuatu which is moving toward Fiji. Meanwhile, Tonga MET’s forecast to midnight tomorrow issued at 1:00pm today warns of strong wind and heavy rain for the Niuas.

Warnings of heavy rain, flash flooding, and strong to gale force winds for all of Tonga tonight, have been issued by Tonga Met as a tropical depression located around 465km west, northwest of Nuku’alofa is moving slowly toward Tonga.

Tonga could expect two to three cyclones this season, and Tonga Met says there's a chance that at least one of them could be a Severe Tropical Cyclone (Category 3 and above). The current cyclone season began on 1 November and runs through to the end of April 2017.

Tonga is expecting another King Tide this evening, with some sea flooding expected when the high tide occurs at 8:57 pm in Nuku‘alofa. The extreme high tides experienced this week are expected to continue through to Sunday.
