Rev. Dr Palu (Letters, 11 Feb.) makes a crucial mistake in asserting that the King has executive authority over government, as the King does not. This is a strange, and volatile situation. Contrary to what Rev Dr Palu implies, it would be better for Tonga if the King was to cooperate with the PM, not the other way around. - Max K.

The Prime Minister, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, arrived in Tonga this afternoon, 16 February, from New Zealand, after being away for almost three weeks. He has not resigned his defence portfolio after the King withdrew his confidence and consent to his appointment two weeks ago. The Prime Minister has been absent from the Legislative Assembly for over three months.

King Tupou VI has consented to relocate people from his estates who were affected by the volcanic eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai and tsunamis. Among the worst hit areas in the catastrophe on Jan. 15, were the royal estates of Kanokupolu (Tongatapu) and Mango Island, (Ha’apai).

The investiture of HM King Tupou VI as the 24th Tu‘i Kanokupolu will be held at a Royal Kava ceremony, the Taumafa Kava, on Saturday June 27 at Mala‘e Pangai Lahi in Nuku'alofa, followed by eight days of national celebrations. A Coronation Service and ceremony will be held at the Centenary Church on July 4.
