All secondary schools in Tonga will add an extra hour to their daily timetable to prepare for a possible school shutdown, amid the COVID-19 global outbreak, the Minister for Education and Training, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni said today, 19 March. The Secondary Schools Inter-college Sports event due to be held in April has been postponed to November.

Disappointing results for Tonga's national exams in 2019, with a very low pass rate, has stung the Ministry of Education and Training to look at ways of improving students performances in the future. "We recognize there is a problem and we are outlining our plan to try and solve this issue,” said the Minister for Education and Training, Hon Siaosi Sovaleni this week. However, the outcomes would not be immediate but in the long run.

The Secondary School Entrance Exam results for class six students this year have revealed that Government Primary Schools (GPS) and church primary schools are struggling, with less than 50% of students passing key national examinations. Less than half passed English and Mathematics, while over half passed Tongan studies (Lea Faka-Tonga) and Science. Remedies suggested include investing in teachers, expanding kindergartens, encouraging families to make sure children eat breakfast to enhance concentration; and promoting reading at home.
