Tonga’s third solar farm is being constructed at Vaini on Tongatapu, at a cost of $14 million (USD) under Japanese aid funding. The project will introduce a special micro-grid system to coordinate electricity generated from a variety of renewable sources in the future.

Pacific Island Forum Leaders made a commitment to be Climate Leaders when they adopted the Majuro Declaration for Climate Leadership in Majuro, Marshall Islands early this month, 5 September. The Declaration will be presented by the Chair of the Pacific Forum to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The International Renewable Energy Agency IRENA launched the world's first Global Renewable Energy Atlas on 13 January at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate UAE, to coincide with the opening of IRENA's two-days Third Assembly 13-14 January. Tonga's Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano led a 9-members Tongan delegation.

Eighteen months ago I provided our Government a sound technical proposal for the production of cheap electricity using Saafa grass along lines already used in Denmark for 20 years. A year and a half has passed, and our Government still insists on pursuing pie in the sky renewable energy projects while totally ignoring the only feasible option available. - Peter Goldstern.
