A meeting looking at the performance of the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access (PHAMA) Program as well as its next phase is underway this week in Fiji. According to an impact report launched last year by PHAMA, the program has positively impacted around 142,200 livelihoods and 5,600 jobs in the Pacific.

Tonga’s initiative to open up a new export market for Tongan squash in China could lead to first shipments as early as next season (2016) – if the Chinese government is satisfied that Tonga’s produce does not present a “high risk” for food safety and biosecurity - and that means that Tonga's produce has to be clean to a high standard, throughout the growing, packing and export process.

Siutoni Tupou, Tonga's new Export Pathway Manager, today received a new vehicle, and equipment to help her maintain an important working relationship between Tonga's export farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries, assisted by the Australian-funded Pacific Horticulture and Agricultural Market Access Program (PHAMA).
