HRH Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka Ata (47), this afternoon surrendered two of his noble titles, 'Ulukalala and Ata, to become the new Crown Prince and the heir to the Tongan throne, taking up the noble title Tupouto'a.

Tonga's aging King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV for the first time was unable to attend the July 4 military parade - this year marking his 88th birthday - and the inspection of the parade was carried out by Crown Prince Tupouto'a at Mala'e Pangai in Nuku'alofa.

FROM OUR ARCHIVES; Hon. Dr Frederick Vaka'uta Sevele, (61) has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Tonga, as from 30 March 2006, he confirmed last night, calling it, "a new era in cooperation with the private sector...who will drive the economy".

Archaeologists who are working on a project to map Tonga's ancient terraced tombs this week began the first laser imaging and remote sensing work to be conducted in Tonga, and they aim produce a three dimensional graphic map of Lapaha as as it was during the reign of the Tu'i Tonga from the 13th century to 1885.

The Tongan Noble Fakafanua (44) died suddenly this morning in Nuku'alofa. The Prime Minister's Office confirmed that Fakafanua collapsed and died on Hala Vuna, Ma'ufanga, while he was out for his early morning walk.
