The passing of ten nights after the burial of Tonga's late King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV was marked this morning with a funeral ceremony called the Pongipongi Tapu, or sacred morning, at Pangai Lahi, with a traditionally massive presentation of food. Archaeologists who are working on a project to map Tonga's ancient terraced tombs this week began the first laser imaging and remote sensing work to be conducted in Tonga, and they aim produce a three dimensional graphic map of Lapaha as as it was during the reign of the Tu'i Tonga from the 13th century to 1885.

The Tongan Noble Fakafanua (44) died suddenly this morning in Nuku'alofa. The Prime Minister's Office confirmed that Fakafanua collapsed and died on Hala Vuna, Ma'ufanga, while he was out for his early morning walk.
