King Tupou VI has consented to relocate people from his estates who were affected by the volcanic eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai and tsunamis. Among the worst hit areas in the catastrophe on Jan. 15, were the royal estates of Kanokupolu (Tongatapu) and Mango Island, (Ha’apai).

Tonnes of plastic water bottles have been coming into Tonga through aid supplies since the Hunga Tonga- Hunga Ha’apai Volcanic eruption and tsunami devastated coastlines in January. Volunteers have been collecting bottles and plastic waste from over 1,500 households in Tongatapu, which can be compacted in two balers that were donated by the Australian Government, supporting the activities of a local 'No Pelesitiki' campaign.

It was with profound sadness, that we learned of the death in Washington D.C. of the eminent scholar and great friend of Tonga, Adrienne L. Kaeppler (86), this weekend. Vava'u Press Ltd, publishers of Matangi Tonga Online, were privileged to have worked with Adrienne over the last 35 years. An American research anthropologist and writer, known for her books devoted to the culture of Tonga and Hawaii, Adrienne brought to the English-speaking world important insights into Polynesian cultures, especially Tonga, Hawaii and Rapa Nui, and also Asian dance, in a body of scientific work written over five decades. A total of 174 repatriated passengers, were released from the Tanoa Hotel quarantine on Tuesday, March 1, after testing negative to COVID-19. Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa said those arriving on the next repatriation flights, who would like to quarantine in their own homes can write a letter to the Ministry of Health, who will inspect the homes before approvals.

Bank of South Pacific Tonga Limited today announced a Net Profit After Tax of T$11.85 million for the financial year ending 31 December 2021. The result was driven by the release of Covid-19 provisions, good foreign exchange revenue, and strong transaction volumes. BSP Tonga Country Head, Mrs Marcellina Wolfgramm-Haapai said this result was 20% above the 2020 financial result.

The trauma of their recent experiences will no doubt remain with the displaced communities for a long time to come – but, in the meantime, the smiles of joy on the children’s faces as they play table tennis brings happiness in these difficult times.
