The Government of Niue marked 50 years of self-governance on 19 October 2024. Celebrating its sovereignty and achievements, since gaining its independence in 1974.

Niue became a self-governing in October 1974 while maintaining strong ties with New Zealand.

Niue’s Prime Minister, Hon Dalton Tagelagi said that this 50th anniversary is special because it shows the strength and determination of Niueans in shaping their future.

“Fifty years ago, the people of Niue made a courageous and visionary decision,” he said “We honour and remember our ancestors and those who came before us for the hardships and sacrifices they endured to pave the way for us.”

“They have lifted us above their shoulders towards a brighter, stronger future filled with possibilities.”

“The people of Niue, whether they be on the island or living abroad, are at the heart of today’s anniversary. Their strength, commitment and love of Niue is, above all else, what makes Niue’s self-governance such a success story.”

Hon Tagelagi thanked the people of Niue for their resilience and the international partners for their support to the nation’s growth.

The celebrations were attended by New Zealand’s Governor-General, Dame Cindy Kiro, alongside other dignitaries from the Pacific.
