Niuafo'ou, Tonga
The community living on the remote island of Niuafo'ou, in Tonga's far north, can now access a 24-hour power supply, through a new solar mini-grid that was commissioned by Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala on Friday, 11 October, under the Tonga Renewable Energy Project (TREP).

A fire razed a classroom building for Forms 1-3 at Niuafo’ou High School on Wednesday 21 September at around 3:00pm. Teachers and students used water to stop the fire from spreading to the nearby office, saving the computers and supplies. No-one was injured.

Strong wind warnings are currently in place for all land and sea areas of Vava’u and the Niuas as Tropical Cyclone Amos slowly intensifies and tracks towards the Niuas and Samoa today, warns the Tonga Meteorology Department. The cyclone Category 2 is moving southeast and has the potential to develop into a Category 3 storm over the next few days.
