An international group of scientists have arrived at the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai volcano this week, to conduct a month-long research to better understand the cause of the powerful 2022 eruption. NZ scientist Cornel de Ronde is leading the voyage onboard the research vessel R/V Tangaroa, from 15 May to 12 June. It will be the first voyage to HTHH to comprehensively map the seafloor, while also measuring the gravity and magnetic signatures of the remaining edifice.

Mr Taaniela Kula has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR). He signed a four year contract on Tuesday 23 January, at the Public Service Commission, Nuku'alofa.

Tonga's Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources launched the ‘Toe Talatalanoa Overseas Program’, a program for the ministry to share information and concerns regarding land, with Tongans overseas. The program runs from 5-22 December in Australia, and will later extend to New Zealand and the United States of America.

Nineteen water supply and reservoir stations servicing 16 villages in the Tongatapu 5 electorate were cleaned by the Hihifo youth council on Satuday 21 November, to ensure communities have safe access to water. “The youth is here to help, but everyone else in the community has a role to play,” says Lopeti Tufui.

A smart water monitoring system, known as ToGWIS, will provide critical data to help sustain Tonga’s groundwater source in the face of climate variability. The new system was signed over to government at a workshop on 28 June at the Tanoa Hotel.
