Cyclone Gita will reach Category 5 by the time it hits Tongatapu and ‘Eua this evening, the strongest in recorded history to approach Tonga, warns Director of Tonga MET, 'Ofa Fa'anunu at a press conference this morning. “Category 5 means that the winds have reached 110 knots. This is around 220 and 230 km per hour winds....We need to move now to evacuation centres.”

Tonga has decided to adopt daylight saving and will advance its clock one hour ahead on Sunday, November 6 for two-months, in order to allow more daylight hours in the evening during the longer summer days. The change will put Tonga 14 hours ahead of UTC during the summer.

Tongan farmers might expect some rain early next week to relieve the current dry conditions in Tongatapu, Ha’apai, ‘Eua and Niuafo’ou, according to the Tonga Meteorology Department today. However, water conservation is still advised as below average rainfall is persisting for the season.
