An employee of the Tonga Legislative Assembly has been suspended over their alleged involvement with illicit drugs, pending a formal police criminal investigation, Parliament's Office reported.

HM King Tupou VI expressed his immense concern that illicit drugs are being spread easily and reaching families and communities in Tonga. “It is urgent to stop the spread of the use of illicit drugs,” he told Members of Parliament today. HRH Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala delivered the King's speech, at the state opening of the 2024 session of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga.

MPs were reminded of their constitutional role to effectively represent their electorate and voters, at the opening of a three-day induction program on 27 February. The Clerk told MPs one of the effective means of Parliament’s oversight role of the Executive is “Question Time”, which is widely used in overseas Legislatures, where Cabinet Ministers respond to questions from MPs. She said it is considered an effective tool used in the Legislature to scrutinise the government’s work.
