High-level parliamentary delegation visits Australia

A high-level Parliamentary delegation from the Legislative Assembly is visiting  Australia, from June 21 to 28, as part of an Australia-led initiative aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations.

The delegation has been engaging with key Australian government departments and agencies across various sectors, including strategic communications, cybersecurity, education, and science.

The delegation is led by former PM and People’s Representative for Tongatapu 3, Hon. Hu‘akavameiliku (Siaosi Sovaleni), and Chairman of the Whole House Committee and Nobles’ Representative for Vava‘u 2, Lord Tu’ilakepa, accompanied by People’s Representative for Vava‘u 14, Hon. Dr Mo‘ale ‘Otunuku, Deputy Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, Dr. Sione Vikilani, and Second Secretary at the Australian High Commission in Tonga, Cullum Finley.

During their visit, the delegation met with the First Assistant Secretary of the Strategic Communications Division at DFAT, Suzanne McCourt, in Canberra. They discussed regional public diplomacy, strengthening communication resilience, and addressing the growing threat of disinformation in the Pacific.

The delegation departed Canberra for South Australia on yesterday evening, 24 June, to continue their official visit.
