Globalization, which was supposed to benefit developed and developing countries alike, is now reviled almost everywhere, as the political backlash in Europe and the US in recent years has shown. The challenge is to minimize the risk that the backlash will intensify, and that starts by understanding – and avoiding – past mistakes.

Describing economic globalization as a double-edged sword that should be viewed comprehensively, China's President Xi Jinping said in Davos in January that we should pay attention to its deficiency but "not give up eating for fear of choking" or simply attribute the problems like the financial crisis and refugees to globalization, let alone protectionism. China views globalization's general trend as right. In May this year, China will host the “Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation” in Beijing to discuss ways to boost cooperation, build cooperation platforms and share cooperation outcomes.
