The Ministry of Infrastructure has stopped the Tonga Red Cross from constructing temporary shelters for families in Ha‘apai after Tropical Cyclone Ian devastated the islands in January. Two houses completed on the island of Mou'unga'one were handed over to affected families this week but the Red Cross had planned to build another 24 to alleviate the suffering.

Pacific Islands fisheries development projects have received USD$45 million in allocations from the European Union over the last four years to help promote sustainable management of fisheries resources and with the aim of ensuring maximum economic returns for the region from the resources. However, the countries in the region are mainly responsible for their own development - based on national strategies, the European Union reported.

Tonga and China will celebrate the 15th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on November 2, while looking forward to continuing development assistance along with opportunities for Chinese enterprises to invest in Tonga. China has also expressed an interest in closer coordination and cooperation with Tonga in international and regional affairs, according to a statement from the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Wang Donghua.
