A new cyclone is threatening children and families in Fiji, UNICEF warned this afternoon. Only weeks after Category 5 Cyclone Winston ripped through the Fiji Islands, affecting 40% of the population, Fiji is once again facing extreme weather conditions due to the presence of three tropical disturbances, one of which has formed into rapidly-intensifying Cyclone Zena.

Disruption to power supply following Cyclone Winston means the University of the South Pacific campuses at Laucala will remain closed until further notice, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Richard K. Coll said yesterday.

Apart from loss of agricultural food crops, some damage to schools, Ngu Hospital and HMAF Camp Fangatongo, Vava‘u has emerged from Cyclone Winston’s two close passes without significant damage to major infrastructure, an official assessment survey has concluded. Australia delivered 400 mosquito nets in partnership with the Tonga Red Cross Society to help control the spread of Zika virus after the cyclone.

Tongan USP students living in the Laucala Campus in Suva, Fiji, are safe after Cyclone Winston left a path of destruction yesterday, 21 February 2016. However, USP students living in Labasa and Lautoka had not yet made contact and attempts to contact them were "futile" due to a nationwide power outage affecting communication, USP's Dr Masasso Paunga stated this morning. The Suva campus has closed.
