An El Niño has been officially declared for Tonga today, by the Tonga Meteorology Department, meaning that the Central and Eastern Pacific Ocean is now warmer than usual, expecting warmer temperatures, less rainfall, and a more active cyclone season.

A tropical depression, expected to form into a cyclone later this week could threaten Tongatapu by the weekend, Tonga Meteorological Services reported today, 13 January. There is an 85% chance of the cyclone becoming severe, impacting Fiji and then Tonga on 17-18 January.
