Funding to cover the participation of four members of delegations from each Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Party at the UN Climate Conference COP29, was announced by the host Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan, yesterday to facilitate the active participation of vulnerable communities who stand to lose the most from the climate crisis.

The Board of the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) as a result of climate change, has announced the selection of Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, from Senegal, as its first Executive Director, for a four-year term beginning November 1, 2024. “This is a key step towards responding to loss and damage by bringing finance to millions of people in developing countries on the frontlines of climate change,” stated the UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change).

The Board of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, established to aid developing countries that are vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, is meeting this week in an international effort to get the Fund operational and recognised as a financial institution within the world bank system, ahead of COP29 the World Climate Summit to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The fund will help small island states and others with funding for climate resilience.
