China’s Belt and Road Initiative has raised important questions about the risk of debt problems in less-developed countries. The risks are serious for the small and fragile economies of the Pacific. However, the analysis finds a different picture. The evidence to date suggests China has not been engaged in deliberate ‘debt trap’ diplomacy in the PICs. It is of great significance to jointly celebrate this historic day. On October 26, 1998, His Majesty King Tupou VI, who was then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence of Tonga visited China, and on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, signed the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations with his counterpart in the Chinese Government. A Chinese company Zhuhai Singyes that is investing more than $10 million pa’anga to build a 2 Mega Watts solar farm in Tonga will sell its energy to Tonga Power Ltd. at a negotiated price, the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Huang Huaguang said at a reception at the Kahana Resort on Wednesday 28 September.
