Around 7,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, donated by the Japanese Government via COVAX, arrived in Tonga this afternoon, Tuesday. “I hope today’s vaccines could help accelerate the on-going inoculation and that we could make the Kingdom well prepared before it comes,” said HE Mr Kensaku Munenaga. However, we cannot, we should not keep closing our border forever, he said. “Only with a change of the policy, Tongans who have been stuck outside of the Kingdom can meet their families here in Tonga.”

Those in Tonga aged 18 and above are urged to get inoculated before the current stock of AstraZeneca vaccines expire on 13 December. Pfizer vaccines for 12-17 year olds currently in the country will expire on December 20.

Around 46,239 people (60%) of Tonga’s eligible population of 76,911 are now fully inoculated for COVID-19. while 73,295 (95%) have received their first doses of either the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccine by November 29, the Ministry of Health confirmed today.

Tonga's Ministry of Health is in a race against time to inoculate 13,738 teenagers with Pfizer before the precious vaccines expire in 28 days time. Health CEO Dr Siale ‘Akau‘ola urges parents to ensure their 12 to 17-year-old children are inoculated “or they will miss out”.

Tonga is returning 10,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines to COVAX today so they can be given to Vietnam before the expiry date. The Ministry of Health is disappointed that unvaccinated people have been slow to take up these doses. So far less than 30% of the total population has been vaccinated. The ministry said it is not easy to get the vaccines and now they are trying to get more. Around 31,600 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive in Tonga next week but these are for 12 to 17-year-olds and pregnant women.

Another 897 Tongans received their first shots and 51 received their second doses of COVID-19 vaccine, for the week September 10-16, after the Ministry of Health urged the 16,352 unvaccinated people in the targeted age groups to hurry up and get their shots this month before the vaccines expire. Unfortunately, at this rate it would take another 55 weeks to reach the target.

Over 27,458 people over the age of 18 years in Tonga, have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, since the second dose roll out program started on June 24 in Nuku'alofa, the Ministry of Health confirmed today, 10 September. This represents 43% of the targeted population of 63,128 aged over 18.

The COVID-19 vaccination will not turn people into zombies, change their DNA or put magnets into their arms. “I hope people will take note that some information circulating is just ridiculous,” said Tonga's Ministry of Health CEO, Dr Siale ‘Akau‘ola yesterday. “The problem is lots of misinformation on social media causes people to be confused,” he said.
