We need the best people in Tonga to run government, not the party who owns a media as the party will have limitation on their interest to lead for the common good of the people of Tonga. After all, the elected members will still be accountable for their locality, but running the government requires the best people the PM judges to be the best in their specialist area. For example, we don't want a novice to captain a ship or pilot an aeroplane, and the risk for failure is very high. Just look at the current portfolios of ministers, most likely, those that were elected from unelected members are specialists in their areas. I totally agree with 'Aisake Eke, if we have the right people in government, Tonga will become a better country. Just as the American team employs a better tactician, it defines the line to victory or failure. The tactician (technical leader) was the key for the American team to win the America's cup. The previous tactician was fired due to underperformance. Note that a lot of qualified and good skillful people (not only in Tonga but overseas) don't have the time and media power or coverage required to qualify or win votes to be a PR, only those who have the media power can be a PR, well mostly. Although, the king appoints Minsters by himself in the past to cabinet seems to be single handed, I would assure you that it was not, most of the outside ministers appointed were the best from the Tongan people (both in qualification, specialisation, wisdom and reliability) that the king has known of worldwide (instead of village wide or fakavahe wide) were selected and they were instrumental in the success of the pro-democratic movements. We now see PRs with very limited skills becoming PRs which means a dead government, i.e. little progress other than incisive comments on the local media. For this reason, I was not a big fan of a democratic government for Tonga. Our culture and custom is a hierarchical system, so a hierarchical government is most effective. I think we will struggle with the democratic movement until we find the best man to lead the government. After all, the king is a natural leader in our Tongan social system.
