The government has allocated $1 million to assist 20 families affected by recent flooding in Tongatapu due to heavy rain, the Prime Minister Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke, announced at a media briefing today, March 7, at St. George Government Building in Nuku’alofa.

The villages most affected by the flooding include low-lying areas of Hala’ovave, ‘Isileli, Popua, and ‘Anana. Homes in these areas are prone to flooding during heavy rains.

The Cabinet initiative aims to raise the platform of houses to prevent future flood damage. The funds will be used to repair houses damaged by the flood, and to raise the foundations of the houses.

“This required work must address this issue to prevent it from occurring in the future,” said the PM.

Meanwhile, the Deputy PM and National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) have inspected villages and areas affected by the floods, after the heavy rains on the last two Sundays, said the Deputy PM.
