The 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM) officially opened today, 8 September, at the Stadium, Sports City in the Solomon Islands, after Tonga’s Prime Minister and Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Valu Eke and other forum leaders arrived in Honiara on Saturday, on a special Royal New Zealand Air Force Flight (RNZAF) from Whenuapai, New Zealand.

Piveni Piukala was told to issue an apology after being reprimanded in a Cabinet meeting this morning, for his widely publicised scuffle with Lord Tu'ilakepa in Parliament on 4 August. PM Hon. Dr Aisake Eke said "If this happens again, he is out! Same goes for all the Ministers, if this happens again, resign!"

The Prime Minister does not have concerns that major projects in the 2025-26 budget could potentially increase the national debt and create a further burden, saying that, "The public debt is currently declining and there are no plans to take on any new debt from overseas." The budget estimate projects the total national debt to be $428.9 million as of 30 June, representing 34% of the country's GDP.

A prisoner from Hu’atolitoli Prison tragically died yesterday from a suspected suicide, the Prime Minister told a media briefing today. He said the prisoner was being treated for a mental health issue at Vaiola Hospital. However, it was not immediately clear whether or not the prisoner had been discharged from Vaiola Hospital at the time of his death.
