Tropical Cyclone Warning: A Tropical Cyclone Warning remains in force for the Niuas.
Warnings
- A GALE WARNING remains in force for the Niuas land areas.
- A STRONG WIND WARNING remains in force for the rest of Tonga.
- A HEAVY RAIN and FLASH FLOOD WARNING remains in force for the Niuas but is now cancelled for Vava'u.
Situation:
Tropical Cyclone Ella was located near latitude 15. 1 south, longitude 172.7 west or about 150km northeast of Niuatoputapu or 317km east-northeast of Niuafo'ou at 4:00pm this afternoon. The system is moving west-northwest at about 5 knots (10km/hr). On its current track Tropical Cyclone Ella is expected to lie about 90km north of Niuatoputapu 12 midnight tonight.
Forecast to midnight tomorrow for Tonga.
For Niuatoputapu: east to southeast winds 30-35 knots (55-65km/hr), possibly rising up to damaging gale force winds with a speed of 35-40 knots (65-75km/hr) this evening. Cloudy with periods of rain, heavy at times with squally thunderstorms, and possible flash flooding. For Niuafo'ou: East to southeast winds 25-30 knots (45-55km/h), with gust up to damaging gale force winds 35-40 knots tonight. Cloudy periods with occassional showers heavy at times with squally thunderstorms.
For Vavau, Ha'apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua: East to southeast winds 25-30knots (45-55km/hr). Occasional showers possibly heavy at times over Vava'u. Elsewhere, cloudy periods with possible few showers.
Outlook for Thursday: For all of Tonga: Fresh to strong east to southeast winds.Cloudy periods with isolated showers.
