Strong wind warnings are currently in place for all land and sea areas of Vava’u and the Niuas as Tropical Cyclone Amos slowly intensifies and tracks towards the Niuas and Samoa today, warns the Tonga Meteorology Department. The cyclone Category 2 is moving southeast and has the potential to develop into a Category 3 storm over the next few days.

Royal Agricultural Shows for Tonga’s two northern outer islands of Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou will be held this month after an eight-year lapse. King Tupou VI will be the guest of honour starting in Niuatoputapu on August 7 and Niuafo’ou on August 8, and continuing throughout all of Tonga island groups.

The World Bank has approved a $TOP7.5 million grant for the construction of about 100 houses for people who lost their homes in Niuatoputapu, in northern Tonga when the island was struck by a tsunami on September 30.

After the tsunami of September 30, it is possible there will be a drought in Niuatputapu, during the coming months, said Sione Talifolau Lihau, a Tonga Red Cross volunteer, who returned to Nuku'aofa last Friday, 23 October, after spending three weeks on the island.
