PM Fakafanua attends Samoa's Independence Day celebrations

The Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua joins Pacific leaders at Samoa's 64th Independence Day celebrations this week held at the Malae o Ti'afau in Mulinuʻu in Samoa from 1 June.

The Royal Tonga Police Band sent a 16-member delegation led by Acting Deputy Commissioner Operations Support, ‘Atunaisa Taumoepeau, and Director of Music and Manager of Specialist Response, Superintendent Siosaia Tonga Mohenoa. The band featured in the morning marching parade, a lunchtime marching display, and an evening stage performance at Government House.

During his visit, Lord Fakafanua paid a courtesy call on Samoa's Prime Minister, Hon. Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt.

Tonga's Prime Minister's Office stated the two leaders reaffirmed the close and enduring relationship between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Independent State of Samoa.

"One such connection is reflected in the family of Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, whose late father was named by the late King Tupou IV in commemoration of Samoa’s independence - Tuto’atasi - an enduring symbol of the close bond between the two nations,." the PMO stated.

Lord Fakafanua also met the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji, Hon. Filimone Jitoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of New Zealand the Rt. Hon. Winston Peters, among other leaders.

As part of the visit, the PM also visited Fero Company Ltd, an Australian company specialising in integrated wire technology solutions, component supply, sub-assembly, and manufacturing services for international markets, which has bases in Samoa and New Zealand.

The Prime Ministger's Office stated that the visit forms part of the government's broader interest in strengthening relationships with innovative industries and exploring opportunities that support economic development, skills transfer, and investment partnerships relevant to Tonga's future development priorities.

Tonga and Samoa continue to share a strong and longstanding relationship, underpinned by deep historical connections, shared Pacific identity, and ongoing cooperation across regional and bilateral priorities.
