Customs seize illegal imported ammunition and alcohol

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Several consignments containing undeclared firearms and rounds of ammunition, alcohol, and fireworks, with no permit, were intercepted by Customs officers between December 2025 and January 2026.

The Ministry of Customs stated today that these sezied goods arrived in Tonga from various countries, including New Zealand and the United States (USA).

A 28-year-old female from Houma was the consignee for 200 rounds of ammunition.

An 81-year-old man from Lapaha attempted to import over 5,000 rounds of ammunition.

Several middle-aged men also attempted to import fireworks and alcohol.

The weapons have been transferred to Tonga Police, and Police investigations continue to be assisted by the Ministry.

"The seized cigarettes, alcohol and fireworks are being kept under Customs' control for further legal actions and destruction," Customs stated.

The Ministry of Revenue and Customs' enhanced inspections process is part of efforts to intercept illicit goods to protect our communities.
