Over the weekend, more than 50 individuals were arrested during a series of Tonga Police Weekend Safety Operations. The arrests were made for various offences, including driving under the influence and illicit drug-related activities.
"The conducted operations are part of our commitment to ensuring a safe community, safe roads, and safe homes for all," Tonga Police stated.
Roadblocks and checkpoints were set up at key locations across Tongatapu with the focus to monitor vehicle movements and to check for drivers driving under the influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile, patrols focused in public areas where alcohol is involved.
As a result, from the weekend's operation, a total of 51 individuals were arrested for numerous offences:
- 16 drivers charged with driving under the influence of alcohol,
- 3 drivers who refused to undergo alcohol testing,
- 3 individuals were arrested for illicit drug related offences, and
- 29 individuals were arrested for alcohol consumption and being drunk in public places.
Of the total arrests, 45 were males and 6 females, ranging from 16 to 61 years old.
With the involvement of youth in these offences, Tonga Police expressed concern and urged parents and guardians to be aware of the whereabouts of their children, especially during the weekends.
Tonga Police reminded the public that anyone refusing to participate in alcohol testing is an offence, and unwilling individuals will be held accountable.
