A 23-year-old man, Halahone Taliai, was sentenced to 13-years imprisonment for the callous manslaughter of ‘Aiveni Tui (36), whom he struck with a machete at Vaini in 2016. His younger brother, Sosefo Malimali Vea, received two years and 3 months sentence, after being convicted on a lesser count..

We should probably stop with the apologizing, that should be something out of court. When we meet our maker and our deeds are being read and we're ready to be judged, would our apology be taken into account, I don't think so. You do the crime you do the time, that is the way justice is.
I'm not sure about the exact details of this case, but stepping back and looking at similar cases in the past it seems there's a pattern in Tonga of people not getting murder and getting manslaughter instead. Maybe a study and review of the murder cases might provide us more details. If there is a bias away from murder sentences or not, and if so, what are the weaknesses in our justice system that allow this bias to take place.
