Return to Tonga, difficult for children of migrants

Encouraging overseas born Tongan youth to spend some time in Tonga and to attend schools in Tonga, through a properly structured program, could help to foster stronger connections with second and third generation offspring of migrants, a new report recommends. But the report also reveals that for students having little or no preparation for a change of lifestyle, settling in to high school is very challenging and can even be dangerous.

There is not much we can do
There is not much we can do about the culture shock because Tonga has its own way of doing things and that difference I think is ok. It's difficult both ways, students going to NZ also are suddenly hit by different culture, and sadly some of their policies are not enough and the students end up getting swallowed up by gangs and going in and out of jail. So it's a problem for all countries to figure out ways to bring them in to our society and not feel left out and alone.
In my experience when I went overseas for secondary school it was a really big culture shock. What helped was going to a school tough on bullying and they had councillors there to help. We also had a time where a teacher would call on us P.I. students to come together and just talk and do activities. So maybe those are things we can look at, cracking down on bullying, councillors, and getting the overseas students together and chat and help each other out. God bless
