Tonga Police accused of "wiping" criminal records

Two very high-ranking Tongan police officers are under an investigation into allegations that 33 convictions of Tongan citizens were ordered to be "wiped" from police records over several years, under an unwritten policy that was tacitly approved by a former and now deceased Minister of Police.

What a humane enlightened loving and appropriate policy! The deceased Honorable Minister of Police should be given an honour for initiating and implementing such a policy. It helped to give at least 33 of our people a better chance in life. The names of the beneficiaries from this progressive policy would clarify whether these people have become “model” citizens in their newly adopted home country and whether they have provided ongoing remittances to their mother country. We should be proud of this policy. Applied in a fair and just way, this policy clearly shows what a forgiving culture we have. - Stephen Vete
