Vava’u has been struck with a serious shortage of benzene this week forcing tourism operators and businesses to look for other sources of fuel - or to cut back heavily on their operations. The shortage will not be eased until the domestic ferry arrives tomorrow, followed by a delayed fuel tanker that will not unload until next week.

A new $307,000 fire station in Pangai, Ha’apai, funded by the National Emergency Management Office and Committee was officially opened on 25 October 2016 by Pangai District Officer, Mr Langi Tonga'onevai. The new fire station replaces the old one destroyed by Cyclone Ian in January 2014.

Amid a continuing fuel crisis in Tonga's northern islands of Vava'u, where petrol shortages have continued for weeks, the government issued a statement today telling consumers that the supply disruption for petrol in Vava'u "is directly due to delays experienced by Pacific Energy in its replacement of the normal Local Costal Tanker with a bigger vessel."

Neiafu bowsers have run out of petrol again today, forcing the Vava’u tourist industry into crisis control at the height of the tourist season, and crippling the local economy. Vava’u has not seen a fuel barge arrive in nearly a month and only a trickle of petrol is getting through. Dozens of vehicles remained queued at an empty petrol station in Neiafu this afternoon, waiting in hope for a whiff of fuel.

Josh Wineera at a gathering at Lea-‘a e-Tohi Ground, Pangai, Ha’apai on Saturday, 23 July, to commemorate the completion of Tropic Twilight 16 humanitarian program. While the program addressed a need for better water storage and sanitation in Lifuka and Foa, it was obvious that Ha’apai is still struggling to recover from the devastating impact of Cyclone Ian in January 2014.
