Women in the countries of the Pacific still have a long way to go in achieving participation of women in decision making at the highest level, while other developing countries are already ahead in this regard, participants at the opening of the first conference of Tonga's university women heard this morning.

Encourage women to reach their highest potential, Joyce Mafi, the Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga, urged yesterday in noting the importance of investing in Tongan women and valuing their work. "The challenge is for the man to support us women so that we can achieve and have a fair share of the positions in government and other areas, just as women have their share of the social life in the home," she said.

In the Pacific Tonga is very lucky because women are well respected by men because of our unique culture despite the developments of this century, the Queen Mother Halaevalu Mata'aho said yesterday. As keynote speaker for the Tonga celebration of International Women's Day, the Queen Mother noted this year's theme "Investing in Women and Girls - Valuing Women's Work" and said this is evident in the displays of handicrafts and weaving of women's valuable work.
