All domestic flights except those to ‘Eua were cancelled today, while an Air New Zealand flight that left Auckland for Tonga this morning was diverted back to Auckland, due to the continuing volcanic eruption in Hunga, Ha‘apai to the north west of Nuku'alofa.

All international flights in and out of Tonga were cancelled starting yesterday Monday, 12 January due to rising ash coming from the volcanic activity, which is continuing from a sumbmarine vent close to Hunga Ha’apai to the north west of Tonga that has spread over hundreds of kilometers in the atmosphere above the Tongatapu region. .

A Jetstream (J32) aircraft operated by the Real Tonga Airlines has been detained and grounded this afternoon after making a full emergency landing at Fua'amotu airport at mid-day today, in what was the second serious aircraft incident for the airline in less than a week.
