The Tongan team provided the first shock of the tournament by beating England 12-5 with two tries from Teuimuli Kaufusi. England then needed to beat Fiji if they were to avoid dropping to the Bowl competition on day two. The English beat Fiji 20-12 in a hard-fought encounter.
