Tonga's unemployment statistics are grim, with youth unemployment reaching as high as 40% in rural areas, according to some estimates. The Tonga Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship (TYEE), a Non-Government Organisation that was set up due to the high rate of unemployment in Tonga, has helped 175 young people gain employment. TYEE celebrated its second anniversary on Friday, November 25.

Four Tongans are among seven fisherman whose bodies have been recovered after their vessel capsized in New Zealand's Kaipara Harbour yesterday. Two have been identified as Tongan cousins Alipate 'Pate' Manumu'a and Sunia 'Junior' Onga'unga, in their 30s, both were fathers.

A $35 million pa’anga Youth Employment Project financed by the World Bank to be handled by the Government of Tonga starting in July 2017, will see funds disbursed over four-years to address youth unemployment in Tonga where the problems of idle youth are enormous and related to youth related anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.

A group of 22 United States Peace Corps volunteers were sworn-in today Thursday, November 3, at the Tanoa International Dateline Hotel before they take up assignments teaching English in rural village schools in Tongatapu and the outer islands.
