A memorial service was held in East Palo Alto, California, late on Friday July 7 for the Tongan royal family members, Prince Tu‘ipelehake, 56, Princess Kaimana, 46, and their driver, Vinisia Hefa, 36, who were killed in a vehicle accident in nearby Menlo Park, on Wednesday, July 5. Princess Mele Siu‘ilikutapu, sister of Prince Tu‘ipelehake attended the service.

News of the sudden dealth of Tonga's "People's Prince" Prince Tu‘ipelehake (56) and Princess Kaimana (46) in a car accident on a California highway yesterday, has shocked Tongans as the news slowly spread in the Kingdom today.

Two members of Tonga's Royal family, HRH Prince Tu'ipelehake and Princess Kaimana, died in a car accident in San Francisco last night according to Tongans living in the area, but this has yet to be officially confirmed by the Palace Office in Tonga.

Tonga's aging King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV for the first time was unable to attend the July 4 military parade - this year marking his 88th birthday - and the inspection of the parade was carried out by Crown Prince Tupouto'a at Mala'e Pangai in Nuku'alofa.

TONGA'S annual Inter-Collegiate Athletic Sports competition opened today at the Teufaiva Stadium, Nuku'alofa, when for the first time schools from all island groups in the kingdom were represented. This year's 59th Inter-collegiate Athletic Sports competition is the first time that student athletes from the northern Niuas have participated, with a five member team.
