One nomination for Tonga's next Prime Minister was submitted in a sealed envelope to parliament today, 22 December.

The Supervisor of Elections has received a new complaint against Semisi Fakahau the newly elected Tongatapu 8 People's Representative for alleged breach of election regulations.

Tonga may have a new Prime Minister at the earliest by Christmas Eve, according to the Interim Speaker of the Tongan Parliament, Lord Tupou, who said that the first chance to call a meeting for the secret ballot would be 24 December.

Mo'ale Finau, the former Ha’apai No. 12 People’s Representative, who lost his seat by a margin of three votes, has applied for a recount of his ballot with the Electoral Commission in Nuku’alofa.

Agreement that Tonga's next Prime Minister must be an elected People's Representative, was reached at a meeting of 14 of Tonga's 17 newly-elected People's Representatives this morning, December 3, according to a spokesperson.

The procedure for appointing the new government’s Prime Minister should start this week with the King to appoint an Interim Speaker to receive nominations for a Prime Minister Designate.

Tongatapu voters have replaced seven of their ten incumbent MPs, retaining only three in today's General Election. One of the incumbents did not restand. No women were successful in taking Tongatapu seats.

Tonga's nobles have reelected the Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakanoto his parliamentary seat, among eight incumbent Nobles Representatives and one new Nobles Representative after 29 men voted at the Palace Office this morning. The official results for the nine Noble's Representatives were announced after polling closed in the General Election at 4:00pm. Results for the 17 People's Representatives polling places will be announced later this evening.
