New Zealand Police have confirmed the names of the two people killed following a bus crash between Wairoa and Gisborne on the night of Christmas Eve. Those killed were 11-year-old boy Sione Taumololo and 33-year-old woman Talita Fifita both of Tonga. Ten people remain in hospital.

Very bad news for Tongans on Christmas Day as New Zealand new media reports that a bus carrying a college group from Vava'u in Tonga who were on their way to Gisborne to perform at a church today, has crashed yesterday killing at least one person and injuring the 45 others on board.

Tonga is among Pacific Islands countries that have identified important marine areas that are ecologically or biologically significant, and Vava'u is one area that has sites that need protecting. “There is an urgent need for follow-up activities to manage and mitigate threats on 22 sites identified as priorities. Seven of these sites are awaiting to be gazetted as conservation areas, with different levels of protection,” said Tonga's representative at the global biodiversity conference (CBD COP13) in Cancun, Mexico this week.

In the Pacific, non-communicable diseases account for around 70% of all deaths, in Fiji that number is 80%, and the tragedy is that most of these deaths are preventable, Dr Tim Martyn of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation in Fiji told delegates from Small Island States, meeting in Suva. Delegates looked at a Global Action Plan to respond to the food and nutrition challenges. People are eating food they can afford and that "is what is making them sick,” he said.
