The Cook Islands ban placed on commercial fishing last month within 50 nautical miles of the nation was highlighted at the Whales in a Changing Ocean conference opening yesterday in Nuku’alofa. Cook Islands Minister of Environment, Hon Kiriau Turepu stressed that the ban is to reduce the interaction between commercial fishing and whales in their waters.

Appellants varied from a 16-month-old girl to a 78-year-old woman. Their appeals were heard before New Zealand’s Immigration and Protection Tribunal. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a record $3.7 billion in climate operations in 2016, a 42% increase from $2.6 billion it approved in 2015. This comprised $2.65 billion for climate mitigation and $1.08 billion for climate adaptation. "A home delivery service is not an option and in today's business environment having no proper address means we are not part of the network...and miss out on a lot of potential business," Tonga's Acting Minister for Public Enterprises Hon. Saia Piukala said in opening the first South Pacific Postal Business Forum, being held from January 24-26 in Nuku’alofa.
