The Tongan Government is facing a national crisis of unknown proportions as a large meeting of angry public servants and supporters decided this evening to stop work, starting tomorrow July 22, at 8.30 am.

Tonga's public servants are appealing to government to halt this week's salary rise, in a bid to win more money in the face of a widening gap between their salary increases and those of the top government officials.

Government today, Friday, June 10, 2005, approved the exemption of various products needed by the agricultural sector from the Consumption Tax. This approval also designated that the same set of items be subject to a zero rate of Consumption Tax.

Tonga's new 15% consumption tax comes into force this week, on Friday April 1, and the Minister of Finance has announced some goods and services that will be either exempt or zero-rated from Consumption Tax.

The Minister of Finance, Hon Siosiua T ‘Utoikamanu, on January 31 released for public scrutiny the Consumption Tax Act 2003.

Tonga Government offices will be closed from Wednesday 22 December 2004 and public servants will not resume duty until Monday 3 January 2005.
