The Government of Tonga is dismissing accusations by a prominent Australian newspaper that China’s foreign aid is hurting Tonga’s economy. The news article claimed that many Tongans believe that they have been "sold out by the Tongan Government”.

Geneva, Switzerland
Forty-five foreign governments, including Tonga's primary aid donors, delivered their reviews and recommendations to the Government of Tonga at the United Nation’s 29th Session of Universal Periodic Review in Geneva, Switzerland this week. Most countries called on Tonga to ratify conventions and to “take steps to raise social awareness in understanding these instruments.", with some countries also urging Tonga to abolish the death penalty and to establish a Human Rights Institution.

Tonga was one of 21 countries absent from voting at the United Nations headquarters, New York, on December 21, when the UN passed a resolution opposing the United States' unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Samoa was also absent. While Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu attended but abstained from voting. Among the 128 countries that supported the resolution were New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

A new economic agreement with the Government of China was signed by Tonga's caretaker government last Friday. The agreement implements the building of a $57.5 million pa’anga sporting complex at Tonga High School ($US24.8 million) and other aid projects.

American, Dean Jay Fletcher (54) who is wanted in Tonga on the charge of brutally murdering his wife in July 2016 has been ordered released in Hawaii, after the United States District Court on November 1 ordered the dismissal of his extradition. The Tonga Government sought Fletcher's extraditon for the offenses of murder, manslughter, and inflicting grievous bodily harm. However, the US Secretary of State had "determined that Fletcher could not be guaranteed a fair trial in Tonga" because he did not have funds to defend himself.

Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva has apologised to the Chinese community in Tonga and especially to individuals who have been victims of violent crimes, the Chinese Embassy said in a statement today. The Ambassador said that Chinese in Tonga still faced many difficulties and challenges. Crimes against the Chinese community happened frequently in 2016 and some brutal cases remained unsolved.

Methamphetamine, criminal deportees and outlaw motorcycle gangs are the three main threats in policing the Pacific Region according to a 2016 Transnational Organised Crime Assessment. While some 35 criminal deportees are returned to Tonga every year, Tonga Police revealed today that it is the gravity of their reoffending that concerns law enforcement because some criminal deportees have killed again.
