Siosaia Langi Naufahu (54) was sentenced to five and a half-years imprisonment for grievous bodily harm for pouring a pot of boiling water on his wife in a "cruel and callous" deliberate action at their home in Sopu last year. The victim, the mother of their nine children, was put on life support with 35 to 40 percent burns of her total body surface area and suffered permanent injury from the terrifying experience.

A quarrel with another person at Ha'ateiho resulted in a complaint laid against Lord Tu'iha'ateiho, that led to police executing a search warrant at the noble's home earlier this month. The noble appeared at the Magistrate's Court today on various charges, and his case was adjourned to Tuesday, 24 May.

A visiting Tongan couple from New Zealand who wanted to adopt a young girl had their application rejected by the Supreme Court on Friday, April 22. The couple intended to take the 5 year-old to be raised in their home in Christchurch. However, the court concluded that the child was better off living in Tonga.

Utah gang member, Nitokalisi Fonua has asked for forgiveness from the families of his two victims during his sentencing by a Salt Lake City court last Saturday April 16. Nitokalisi was sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment for the murder of Viliami Latu (34) in 2007 and Krystal Flores (22) in 2009.

Now imprisoned Tongan businessman, Mosese Uele, was yesterday identified in a New Zealand Court as being the alleged “inside man” for a major illegal drug trafficking operation between China and New Zealand. He was named in the trial of Chinese born Yixin Gan (35) who once lived in Tonga and is accused of smuggling 250kg of drugs into New Zealand.

Tongan resident, Christopher Pedras, also known as Antone Thomas Pedras, may face deportation from Tonga after an extradition hearing took place in Nuku’alofa on March 29. The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement division wants Pedras removed from Tonga to face fraud charges including an alleged $8 million Ponzi scheme.

Poasi Tei, to end the terms of two directors of the Tonga Broadcasting Commission who had refused to resign from the board voluntarily. The Supreme Court’s ruling also exposed a failure of the government in “a duty of candour” to disclose all relevant facts and the content of its decision making process.
